Termites have the potential to cause detrimental damage to your home, and can be a very expensive pest to eradicate. Termites have the ability to damage the structural integrity of your home, so it’s important to have a plan of action in place to keep termites away.

Subterranean termites are one significant species of termite that typically nest in the ground and attack structures through the soil. They cost Florida homeowners millions of dollars every year! These pests feast on wood and other objects that contain cellulose, such as paper, fiberboard, or Styrofoam.

The best control for a subterranean termite infestation is prevention. Below is a list of helpful tips that you, as a homeowner, can follow to prevent termites from targeting your home as their next meal.

    • Eliminate moisture. Termites need moisture to survive. Once they discover an area rich in moisture, they begin to build their colony. Excessive moisture around wooden areas is a haven for termites, and promotes infestations. Be sure to monitor moisture levels in and outside your home. Fix plumbing leaks quickly, direct sprinkler heads, downspouts and drip lines away from your home.
    • Keep firewood a safe distance from your home. Termite’s main food source is wood, and when they detect a firewood pile, they create a pathway for the whole colony and begin to feed on it. This can bring termites into your home when you need to get a fire started! The best way to stop termites from entering your home through firewood is through the use of proper storage. We suggest that you store firewood off the ground, on a platform or rack and not adjacent to your home.
    • Conduct regular termite inspections and apply treatments. If you suspect a termite infestation on your property, contact a licensed pest control professional to determine the best method of treatment. The team here at Trad’s Pest Control is trained to identify infestations, activity, and conditions suitable for termite populations.
