May Flowers
With flowers blooming and spring in the air, it’s prime time for butterflies to start fluttering around your garden – if you have the right plants. Luckily, growing a butterfly garden in Northeast Florida is relatively easy, and very fun! Pick out plants that serve as great host plants and provide nectar that butterflies love, and you’ll see results in no time.

What are some of the fan favorites you’ll find in the Garden Center? Butterflies love brightly colored, simple flowers that have good places to land, such as:

  • Milkweed
  • Lavender
  • Sage
  • Verbena
  • Pipe Vine
  • Passion Vine
  • Cassia
  • False Nettle
  • Black-Eyed Susan
  • And more!

Mr. Greenthumb’s favorite? The Wendy’s Wish Salvia. These magenta-colored perennials will attract butterflies and hummingbirds continuously throughout the summer months. You can find him at the Garden Center every Saturday to help solve any plant problems or questions you may have.

Once you’ve established a garden butterflies will love, they’ll start fluttering in. In Northeast Florida, we’re lucky to have a wide variety of unique butterflies, including:

  • Gulf Fritillary
  • Zebra Long Wing
  • Monarch
  • Spicebush Swallowtail
  • Cloudless Giant Sulphur
  • Eastern Black Swallowtail
  • Gray Hairstreak
  • Skipper
  • Viceroy
  • Red Admiral
  • Giant Swallowtail
  • Checkered Skipper
  • Tiger Swallowtail

A butterfly garden is not only beautiful to look at, but can also be an educational tool for kids. Butterflies lay eggs on host plants and caterpillars feed on them until their cocoon stage. That means kids can witness a butterfly in every stage of its life, from the eggs to larva to caterpillar to cocoon and pupa stage, and finally when a beautiful butterfly emerges.

We’ve got all the  butterfly attracting flowers, vines, herbs, trees, and citrus you need, and they are full of nectar for hungry passerbys. Still need a little help? Butterfly fun fact: Rather than flapping their wings up and down like birds, butterflies make a figure-8 pattern to fly!
